Classic Car Restoration and Repair Tips

Classic Car Restoration

We asked out primary article writer to come up with some ideas to help describe a few of his own tips on restoring classic cars, and what we have below are some simple ideas from his vast experience as a mechanic and having repaired and restored many muscle cars.

Classic Car Restoration Tips

From My friend Doug:

“When it comes to Classic Car Repair Tips, you must always keep in mind your original goals about the car and the detail along with the budget you have set for the project. Restoring an old car is one of the  most enjoyable things a person can do. It can also be a money pit and drain your finances unless you are careful.

At the top of the list on making repairs to your classic car is often forgotten when you are covered with grease and been wrenching for a time. Not every part of your car needs to be repaired unless you are doing a full restoration job. For this reason it is important to protect the parts of the car that are not in need of repair.

The place that receives the most damage is the front fenders. Leaning over to make a quick repair can leave a scratch or blemish on the car that will remind you later how careless you were. As soon as the hood is popped, both sides should be covered with rubber mats. Do this every time and the habit will help save you from future frustrations.

Classic Car Restoration Details

Attention to detail is the difference between a good classic car and a great one. This starts with the basics in repairs. Cleaning each bolt you have to remove then coating the head with a clear enamel spray will make the finished job look better. The biggest problem is when you look at the rest of the motor compartment and decide to do it to the rest of the engine. That is time consuming, but worthwhile for anyone who really loves their car.

The hardest thing to remember is just because they did it one way at the factory does not make it right. As an example, the old Triumph motorcycles had their voltage regulated by a zener diode. The reason these old bikes had problems with charging was due to the fact the zener was mounted on the frame by screwing it in place. To function properly there has to be sufficient contact area between the two parts. Unfortunately after the frame was painted at the factory, the diode was just screwed in, thus the voltage problem. They forgot to clean the area of contact.

You need to use your common sense when doing repairs. Remember you might see a better way of mounting an item or just doing it correctly so the parts will function properly. It is your repair techniques that will bring out the beauty in your classic car repairs. Tips are numerous; just remember to use common sense when applying them.”

All of those are great ideas Doug, and they really complement the thousands of new methods and ideas that will come to you after you read our book that we advertise on this website: “Restoring Your Collector Car”

My brother has a vintage car that he regularly takes to this dealer for tune ups and other maintenance procedures. The dealership is great, but he wants to learn things by himself too. I think this would be a useful resource for him. Thanks for suggesting.
